Executive Summary
Iran’s consumer electronics devices market, defined as the addressable market for computing devices, mobile handsets and video, audio and gaming products, is forecast to be worth around US$7.8bn in 2011. This is expected to increase to US$9.5bn by 2015, driven by growing popularity of LCD TV sets, notebook computers and other key product groups, as well as ongoing expansion of the retail sector.

The Iranian consumer faces a number of pressures including rising unemployment, inflation, and the reduction of government subsidies on food and fuel from September 2010. Iran’s steadily increasing population will support private consumption growth, while spending on consumer electronics will also be driven by new technologies and expanding internet and mobile telecoms penetration. However, opportunities in the Iran market for both domestic and foreign vendors remain restricted by the huge size of the "grey” market, particularly for mobile handsets..

Computers
Computer hardware accounted for around 47% of Iranian consumer electronics spending in 2010. BMI projects Iranian domestic market computer sales (including notebooks and accessories) of US$3.6bn in 2011, up from US$3.4bn in 2009. Computer hardware compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for the 2011-2015 period is forecast at about 4%, with notebooks and netbooks accounting for about 50% of sales.

AV Devices
AV devices accounted for around 31% of Iranian consumer electronics spending in 2010. Iran’s domestic AV
device market is projected at US$2.5bn in 2011. The market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4% during 2011- 2015 to a value of US$3.0bn in 2015.

Mobile Handsets
Mobile handset sales accounted for around 22% of Iranian consumer electronics spending in 2010. Iranian market handset sales are expected to grow to US$2.3bn in 2015, as mobile subscriber penetration reaches 131%. However, the future development of the 3G handset market looks uncertain following the withdrawal of Etisalat’s licence to provide mobile services in Iran. In April 2010. Tamin Telecom became the first company to be licensed to offer 3G mobile telecommunications services in Iran.
